QUESTION NO. 11

QUESTION: Councillor S. O'Hara

To ask the Chief Executive for a summary of the various traffic analysis completed in our area in the past 18 months.

REPLY:

There have been several small traffic studies carried out in relation to the delivery of specific projects completed in the Rathcoole, Saggart, and Brittas areas in the last 18 months.

Traffic analysis and some estimated footfall has been carried out in relation to upgrading of Bus stops in the Rathcoole area. (Bus Stop Enhancement Programme)

A Brittas Safety Scheme is being progressed. A section 38 public consultation has been completed for this scheme in June 2026. Road Safety Audits have been completed.

Some traffic analysis has been carried out in relation to the completion of the Heavy Goods Vehicle weight restriction project.  This has been a countywide review of HGV weight restrictions.  Headed Item was brought to Full Council on the 14 September 2026. The new HGV restrictions will be implemented on 2 November 2026.

Some traffic analysis has been carried out in relation to the Special Speed Limit review 2026, which was adopted by the Council on the Council on the 12 October 2026. The new lower speed limits will be implemented on 31 March 2027.  (Rathcoole will have several 30km/h speed limits adopted.)

Both the HGV Weight restrictions and Speed Limit review went to public consultation. The information on these processes is available on the Council's consultation portal, and on our Council meeting webcasts.

Currently, a Transport Assessment & Plan(s)for the West of County is being progressed.  The study area includes the delivery in-depth transport plans and development of Transport projects to serve Grangecastle, Newcastle, Greenogue, Rathcoole and Saggart.

A number of tenders from Transport Consultants have been received for these Transport Studies. The Tenders are currently being assessed against selection criteria.

South Dublin County Council expect to award the contract by end Q4 2026.
