MOTION NO. 14

MOTION: Councillor T. Gilligan

That this Area Committee agrees to reinstate the grass verge & remove the newly installed 5 parking spaces at Dunawley on the Avenue outside Clonburris school.

REPORT:

The Traffic Section advises that no recent works have been carried out at Dunawley Avenue outside Our Lady Queen of the Apostles, Clonburris National School.

In 2024, the Traffic Section undertook a series of road safety improvement works at this location following engagement with the school principal regarding safety concerns during school drop-off and pick-up periods. The works were designed to enhance the safety of pupils, parents and other road users in the vicinity of the school.
The measures implemented included:
These works were completed in 2024 and have been in operation since that time. There is  a drawing of the completed Safety Works attached to this item.
Feedback received following completion of the scheme indicated that the measures have improved safety and the overall operation of the school frontage.

The Traffic Section is not aware of any complaints regarding the completed works and there is no evidence to suggest that the measures have had a negative impact on road safety.

Given that the infrastructure was installed as part of a targeted school safety improvement scheme and has been operating successfully since its completion, it is not recommended that the grass verge be reinstated or that the parking spaces be removed. Removal of the existing infrastructure would reduce the safety and accessibility benefits delivered by the scheme, including the footpath, waiting area and regulated parking arrangements.
