QUESTION: Councillor D. Loftus
To ask the Chief Executive if there are any plans to increase the number of playing pitches in the county?
REPLY:
SDCC has 176 GAA, soccer and rugby pitches. Our Sports Pitch Strategy recommends four priorities over 15 years:
The capital budget provides €9.35 million for 3G pitches, to be developed where appropriate. Three 3G pitches are available at Sean Walsh Park, Airlie Park and Knockmitten. Three more are at detailed design stage, one in Greenhills Park and two in Clonburris and three further sites are under consideration.
In addition, five senior-sized grass soccer pitches are being developed in Clonburris SDZ: two in the Grange, two in Grand Canal Park and one in Na Cluainte Park South.
New natural grass pitches including a full-size GAA pitch at Tandy’s Lane Park and two soccer pitches and a GAA pitch at Kiltipper Park have also been completed.
Since 2017, €2,041,364.83 in Sports Capital Grant funding has been secured for the grass-pitch upgrades listed below:

Following drainage works to increase capacity and year-round playability, two grass pitches each in Jobstown Park and Tymon Park have reopened. Two in Killinarden Park are also back in use by local teams.
The Public Realm Section maintains pitches through aeration, fertilising, topdressing, reseeding and goalmouth repairs to improve quality, resilience and availability for matches and training despite weather challenges.
Further pitches will be proposed for improvement and funding sought under the new Community Sports Facilities Fund. Grant and capital funding will support upgrades and additional grass and 3G pitches where appropriate.
