QUESTION NO.3

QUESTION: Councillor H. Farrell

To commend SDCC on recent work during the summer by their contractor on cleaning gullies in the Lucan area, and to ask for an update on further works planned in the LPNC areas in Q3 & Q4 2026, given that it is the peak time for leaf-fall and heavy rainfall?

The contract also provides for additional leaf clearance operations between 1 September and 31 January each year. This work may include the removal of leaves from roadways, kerbs, channels, gullies, verges, footpaths, and cycle tracks, as well as the collection of bagged leaves gathered by local residents. These additional operations are undertaken as required and are intended to supplement, rather than replace, the routine cleansing programme.

It should be noted that the timing and scheduling of leaf clearance can be challenging due to the extended period during which trees shed their leaves. Demand for leaf clearance services is typically highest from mid-October to the end of November and can increase significantly following periods of high winds. In some locations, multiple visits may be required to maintain acceptable standards, which can place additional pressure on available resources.

Local Public Realm Supervisors regularly monitor areas and prioritise leaf clearance works based on operational need. Where a councillor or member of the public believes that a particular location requires attention, a request may be submitted to publicrealm@sdublincoco.ie. All requests will be assessed and, where necessary, scheduled for maintenance as part of the ongoing service programme.
