MOTION: Councillor G. Kenny
That this Area Committee calls on SDCC to explore the concept of a recreational sports hub similar to the one in Porterstown Castleknock. The Clondalkin LEA is without a recreational facility similar to Porterstown which includes a six lane synthetic running track together with all weather pitch built to FIFA approved standards. Given the demographical increases in the Clondalkin LEA and the enormous health and sporting benefits of such a facility, will the Council support such a facility and identify potential sites in the Clondalkin LEA.
REPORT:
The Council recognises the importance of accessible recreation and sporting infrastructure in supporting health, wellbeing and participation across the Clondalkin Local Electoral Area.
The provision of new or enhanced facilities is considered in the context of existing Council strategies, available funding, land availability, competing priorities and the wider programme of parks, open space and community infrastructure delivery.
Significant recreation and sports infrastructure is being delivered as part of the Griffeen Park extension in Clonburris. This includes a new all-weather pitch, tennis courts, padel and basketball courts, a ball wall, cricket crease, multiple playgrounds, grass soccer pitches, walking and cycling routes and allotments. Construction is currently underway as part of the wider parks and infrastructure programme for the area. The delivery of these facilities represents a substantial investment in recreational provision for the wider community and will be progressed in line with the approved construction programme and available resources.
