MOTION: Councillor H. Farrell
That the Manager commit to a regular schedule of cleaning the stonework surfaces in Lucan Village Green (due to the easily stained limestone surfaces) on a weekly basis, especially during the summer months when there are a high number of visitors using it, and/or investigate ways of doing a deep-clean and then seal the stone so that repeated, unsightly staining does not occur.
REPORT:
The limestone surface at the Village Green has been inspected following reports from residents regarding staining. The Council has appointed a specialist contractor to undertake deep cleaning works to the affected areas.
Investigations indicate that much of the staining is attributable to animal fats and food residues which have penetrated the porous limestone surface over time. As a result, specialist cleaning methods are required to effectively remove the staining without causing damage to the stone.
Following completion of the cleaning works, the Council will review the potential benefits of applying a protective sealant to the limestone surface. The effectiveness of any sealing treatment will be assessed to determine the most appropriate long-term maintenance approach, including the frequency of routine cleaning and any future resealing requirements necessary to maintain the appearance and condition of the stone.
The Council will continue to monitor the condition of the area and implement an appropriate maintenance regime based on the outcome of this assessment.
