MOTION: Councillor S. O'Hara
That this Area Committee asks the Chief Executive to examine the provision of an accessible gym/ outdoor strength-training facility in Newcastle, comparable to the recently installed facility in Rathcoole Park, and to consider including the proposal in the 2027 Public Realm Improvement Works Programme, taking into account Newcastle's significant population growth and the current lack of a comparable local exercise facility.
REPORT:
There is not a significant amount of suitable public open space that has been taken in charge in Newcastle that would accommodate an accessible outdoor gym and strength-training facility. The only suitable location currently identified for such a facility is Graydon Park West.
Graydon Park West has not yet been taken in charge by the Council; however, the taking-in-charge process is progressing. Should the park be taken in charge before the end of the year, the provision of outdoor exercise and strength-training equipment will be included for consideration in the draft 2027 Public Realm Improvement Works Programme. At that stage, the proposal can be assessed alongside other projects for inclusion in the programme.
