QUESTION: Councillor F. Timmons
To ask the Chief Executive to issue a detailed report into what progress has been made in the review of council buildings and how they will be made available for community use?
REPLY:
Clondalkin Civic Offices and County Hall are primarily operational buildings accommodating public services, meetings, Council staff, elected members, tenants and other users. Any request for community use of public areas within these buildings must be considered in the context of existing activities and must not adversely affect the delivery of Council services.
The review currently underway at County Hall is focused principally on workspace and operational requirements. As part of this process, opportunities to enhance or expand the use of publicly accessible spaces for community purposes will be considered, where this can be achieved without impacting the building’s primary functions.
To date, no specific proposals have been agreed arising from the review. Any opportunities identified will be assessed with regard to operational, security, accessibility, health and safety, and resource considerations.
A review of the use of Clondalkin Civic Offices, including the potential to provide some community space, is also due to be carried out. In the short term, the concourse area will be used to accommodate temporary library services during the refurbishment of Clondalkin Library, which is scheduled to commence in early 2027.
The Council will continue to examine appropriate opportunities for community use of available public spaces within its buildings through the ongoing review process.
