To ask the Chief Executive for a report into the 'Bus Stop Enhancement Programme' where the NTA were to provide funding to South Dublin County Council, starting in 2024, for a series of new bus stop shelters.
REPLY:
The National Transport Authority (NTA) provides funding to South Dublin County Council (SDCC) under the Bus Stop Enhancement Programme (BSEP) to improve bus stop infrastructure throughout the county.
SDCC's Traffic Section is working closely with the NTA to deliver the programme. The final design approval for bus stop enhancement works rests with the NTA. The provision of new bus shelters is subject to site-specific considerations, including available footpath space, accessibility requirements, safety considerations, underground utilities, and passenger usage levels.
While bus shelters are generally provided at suitable locations, the NTA may determine that a shelter is not appropriate at certain stops due to constraints such as limited space, safety concerns, or the nature of passenger demand. For example, some bus stops primarily serve set-down activities and may not warrant the installation of a shelter.
Bus stop enhancement works carried out during 2025 are detailed in the table below. Construction works are continuing at locations that have received NTA approval. In addition, SDCC has submitted proposals for further bus stop improvements to the NTA and is awaiting approval to progress these locations to the next stage of design and construction.
The Bus Stop Enhancement Programme remains an important element of improving public transport accessibility and passenger facilities across South Dublin County.
