QUESTION NO.28

QUESTION: Councillor L. O'Toole

To ask the Chief Executive for an update on the installation of signage recognising the Gold, Silver and Bronze medal achievements of Tidy Towns groups within South Dublin County confirming which areas received medals, which have had the appropriate signage installed and which remain outstanding including the expected timeframe for completion.

REPLY:

Tidy Towns groups receive ongoing support through regular engagement, practical assistance and funding for initiatives arising from recommendations contained in Tidy Towns Adjudicators' Reports. In 2025, funding of €82,000 was provided by SDCC to support local projects and activities.

Participation in the National Tidy Towns Competition continues to grow, with Adamstown, Knocklyon and Rathcoole entering for the first time in 2025, followed by Springfield's inaugural participation in 2026. This increasing level of involvement reflects the strong commitment of local volunteers and communities. It is particularly encouraging that four groups achieved scores in excess of 300 marks, while newer entrants have also embraced the competition and are making positive progress. The consistent improvement in scores achieved by participating groups demonstrates the sustained effort being invested in enhancing their local areas.

To build on these achievements and celebrate Lucan Tidy Towns' Gold Medal award, a Sustainability and Biodiversity Tidy Towns Event was hosted in April 2026, featuring a range of guest speakers. The Mayor presented the Lucan Tidy Towns Committee with its Gold Medal and congratulated the group on this significant achievement, acknowledging its role in inspiring other participating communities. The Climate Change and Environmental Awareness Officer for SDCC noted that the award reflected the group's consistent progress, following several years of Bronze Medal success, and recognised the commitment and dedication that contributed to this achievement. In addition, an artist engaged through the Dublin Canvas initiative has been commissioned to create a Gold Medal themed traffic light box artwork to commemorate the occasion.

To further recognise the contribution of Lucan Tidy Towns, procurement has recently commenced for the design, production and installation of a road sign acknowledging the group's Gold Medal status. Tidy Towns groups that hold Gold, Silver or Bronze Medal status may retain such signage for as long as that status is maintained in subsequent competitions. The Tidy Towns Unit of the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht advises that signs should be replaced or removed if a group's medal status changes. Once procured, arrangements will be made with Lucan Tidy Towns regarding the location of the sign on one of the approach roads to the village.
