QUESTION: Councillor E. Ó Broin
To ask the Chief Executive what measures are put in place for grass cutting on open park lands during prolonged periods of dry weather?
REPLY:
The Dublin region experienced a prolonged dry spell during July and August, with very little rainfall for over two months. These conditions significantly reduced grass growth across parks, open spaces and roadside verges managed by South Dublin County Council.
As a result, many grassed areas turned brown and appeared dry. This is a normal response to prolonged dry weather and does not generally indicate permanent damage to established grass areas.
The reduced need for grass cutting allowed Parks and Public Realm staff to focus on increasing other maintenance activities across the county. These included:
The rainfall experienced over the past week has resulted in grass growth beginning to recover across many locations. As growth rates continue to increase, mowing operations will be adjusted accordingly to ensure parks, open spaces and recreational areas are maintained to the required standard.
While the recent dry spell reduced grass growth and mowing requirements, it also provided an opportunity to undertake a range of maintenance and improvement works across parks and playgrounds. With the return of rainfall, grassed areas are now recovering, and the Council will continue to manage its parks and open spaces to ensure they remain safe, attractive and accessible for all users
