QUESTION NO.11

QUESTION: Councillor C. Brady

To ask the Chief Executive for an update in relation to representation Ref. 1922562 concerning reported dumping of grass cuttings in a public open space, and to outline the protocol for dealing with this type of dumping complaint.

REPLY:

CC1922562 was referred to the designated Litter Warden for investigation. The Warden contacted the member of the public that reported the issue of dumping of grass cuttings, they were advised that a witness statement would be required for enforcement action to proceed under the Litter Pollution Acts. The Litter Warden continues to monitor this location. When evidence is uncovered by a litter warden, or when a witness statement is provided, SDCC takes all available action under the Litter Pollution Acts. As a result of this complaint, Litter Enforcement have requested that Public Realm consider the erection of anti-dumping signage at this location.

SDCC is committed to increasing awareness on dumping of domestic garden waste which if incorrectly disposed of it becomes litter and/or illegal waste. SDCC has recently updated its garden waste signage and where requested, garden waste signage is erected on light poles in areas impacted by illegal dumping of garden waste. The Environmental Awareness section provides updates to residents, via social media posts, to encourage responsible disposal of garden clippings and similar garden waste in the householders own domestic bin or compost unit.
