QUESTION: Councillor L. O'Toole

Can the Chief Executive confirm whether the limestone surfaces, steps and seating elements installed as part of the Lucan Village Green project have been treated with an appropriate protective sealant to minimise staining, weathering and surface marking? Given the susceptibility of limestone to marking and discolouration can the Chief Executive also outline the maintenance and cleansing programme that will apply to the Village Green, including the frequency of cleaning of the steps and other limestone features and whether a long-term maintenance plan was considered as part of the design and material selection process.

REPLY:

The materials chosen for the Village Green project were selected as they have been successfully installed in similar public realm improvement projects throughout the Country. The limestone material is, in general, self-cleansing during rain events. Localised staining may need to be cleaned from time-to-time particularly during dry spells of weather. The public realm team will monitor the area in this regard.

A protective sealant is not proposed to be installed at this time. In similar projects throughout the Country this has not been required and a long-term issue with staining has not arisen.  However, the area will be monitored during on-going maintenance to ascertain if a long-term issue with staining of the stone persists and if further remedial measures should be considered.
