Cathaoirleach's Business 

To ask the Chief Executive whether Lucan Village could be considered for a 'smart town' pilot initiative, including digital visitor information, smart footfall monitoring, Wi-Fi analytics, or QR-enabled heritage and business promotion to support economic development. 

REPLY:

The Council is positively disposed towards initiatives which support innovation, digital engagement, and local economic development. The proposal to consider Lucan Village as a potential ‘smart town’ pilot is consistent with the broader objective of enhancing town and village centres, improving the overall visitor and business experience, and greater opportunity for all.

The elements outlined, including digital visitor information, smart footfall monitoring, Wi-Fi analytics, and QR-enabled heritage and business promotion, reflect approaches that are aligned with emerging smart place-making practices. These would be considered within the wider context of the development of the Smart South Dublin initiative, which will seek to provide a strategic framework for exploring how smart technologies can support communities, local enterprise, and service delivery.

The advancement of such a proposal will require the undertaking of a full scoping exercise to assess feasibility, identify appropriate technologies, and determine the potential benefits for Lucan Village. This would also include the preparation of an appropriate resourcing plan, having regard to existing budgetary commitments and the need to ensure value for money and alignment with Council priorities.

Accordingly, while the proposal is welcomed and will be given due consideration, its progression to a live pilot project would be contingent on the outcome of these assessments, the availability of resources, and engagement with relevant stakeholders.
