Can the Manager confirm what set of criteria are used when allocating shelters for bus stops?

REPLY:

Bus shelter allocation and approval is managed by the National Transport Authority (NTA) under the Bus Shelter Enhancement Programme (BSEP). SDCC’s role is to identify, design, and propose suitable locations for bus shelters in conjunction with the NTA. However, the final decision regarding the approval and installation of bus shelters rests with the NTA.

The key considerations typically include:

• Passenger usage levels at the stop
• Safety and accessibility requirements
• Available footpath width and site constraints
• Proximity to junctions, driveways, utilities, or underground services
• Ability to accommodate Accessible Bus Stop design standards
• Operational considerations for buses and pedestrians
• Requests and feedback received from local communities and elected members

Each proposed location is assessed individually, and in some cases physical or technical constraints may prevent the installation of a shelter.
