MOTION: Councillor F. Timmons

That this Area Committee requests, on behalf of the Clondalkin Presentation Nuns, that contact be made with the nuns, who also have a long history of educating children in Clondalkin, to investigate how a lantern-type sculpture to symbolise Nano Nagle might be installed somewhere in the village, as a piece of art for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Presentation Nuns by their founder, Nano Nagle.

REPORT:

A teacher from Scoil Áine, Clondalkin contacted the Arts Office recently, through Councillors Timmons and O’Hara, on behalf of a committee of locals working with the local Presentation Sisters who are looking for ways to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the Presentation Order by Venerable Nano Nagle.

Richie O'Sullivan, Assistant Arts Officer - Public Art, has offered to meet with the committee representative to discuss some considerations to be explored further, in commissioning an artwork.

The first step will be to establish a feasible budget. The budget will inform the type of artwork, or artform might be considered, which may include a permanent sculpture, or for example a piece of music or a literary work celebrating their history. The budget and scale of a commission will be reliant on the capacity for local fundraising.

The Arts Office can help the committee to develop a brief for an artist and the selection process, and with any permissions that might be required for a chosen location. While the Arts Office may not have direct funding to commission an artwork in this case, we will be able to offer support in advice and guidance.

It was not clear from the initial query, if the artwork is being commissioned by the school in conjunction with the Presentation Order and what resources might be available through a commemorations programme.
