QUESTION NO. 5

QUESTION: Councillor D. Donnelly

To ask the Chief Executive what the process is for the development of a new bus stop

REPLY:

The process of the development of a new bus stop typically begins with the identification of a need for a new stop, which may arise from requests from residents, elected members, public transport operators, development proposals, or transport studies.

A proposed bus stop location is then assessed by Council staff and the National Transport Authority (NTA) to determine its suitability, taking into account factors such as passenger demand, road safety, accessibility requirements, proximity to existing stops, traffic impacts, available space within the public road, and compliance with relevant design standards.

Where a location is deemed suitable, a design is prepared and submitted to the NTA for approval and funding consideration. Subject to NTA approval and the availability of funding, the project proceeds through detailed design, procurement (if required), and construction.

The decision regarding the provision of new bus stops and associated infrastructure rests with the NTA, with the Council acting as the delivery agent where approved and funded.
