QUESTION: Councillor D. McManus
To ask the Chief Executive what if any measures are available to SDCC in the management and control of foxes in public areas and if the Chief Executive is aware of any public health risks or advice to the public?
REPLY:
Local authorities do not have a role in the management and control of foxes in public areas. Foxes are generally visible in the urban environment due to food being available, however the council advises against the deliberate feeding of wild animals in the urban environment as it can lead to stressful situations with some residents.
Zoologists classify them as a part of the biodiversity of Dublin City and County and they have a role in the control of vermin. The introduction of wheelie bins has restricted their access to waste domestic food as they generally cannot overturn these bins. However, foxes can also cause noise disturbance during the night when they excite domestic animals.
If residents are experiencing difficulty with foxes, the DSPCA or wildlife management/control services providers can be contacted.
