'That this Committee requests an update on Safe Routes to School applications and future expansion opportunities for schools across Lucan.

REPLY:

So far, in relation to the LPNC area, safe school streets works have been completed at:

An Taisce’s Safe Routes to School SRTS programme is a national programme of over 900 schools that considers works at the school as well as issues for vulnerable road users in the environs of the schools. Improvements at these schools is delivered by the local Authorities and funded by the NTA.

Delivery of the Safe Routes to School SRTS programme is carried out in rounds, the current round of schools in the LPNC area are now at design development stage, a meeting was held with principals and An Taisce has provided the council with an outline delivery plan. The preliminary design will be developed, and a report will be issued in later this year.

The Council also has a scheme to provide Safe School Zone measures at school entrances under the Safe School Zone programme and includes schools which were not part of the National SRTS programme but have requested measures. Currently we are developing a scheme at Esker Educate Together NS. A meeting with principal is scheduled for this month, to review traffic issues and potential direction for a scheme design.

Future Safe School Zone will be developed for ST PETER APOSTLE SEN NS and NEILLSTOWN N S, in coordination with the Neilstown district centre enhancement.
