MOTION: Councillor Y. Collins
That this Council considers putting the bin back at the top of Spider Hill, Rathfarnham, where it is more needed, and in this regard, possibly relocating one of the new bins to here.
REPORT:
South Dublin County Council has significantly expanded and upgraded litter bin provision in Rathfarnham in recent years. The number of solar-powered compactor bins has increased from 8 to 31, including upgrades to the original units. These bins compact waste on site, increasing capacity by up to five times compared to standard litter bins, and are equipped with smart monitoring technology that enables more efficient collection scheduling and reduces unnecessary vehicle movements.
As part of the consideration for the removal of the bin from this location, health and safety concerns for the servicing of the bin were identified. The original location of the bin is on a tight bend on a narrow road, providing minimum space for the service vehicle to park safely. Alternate bins are available nearby established pedestrian routes.
In accordance with the Litter Bin Installation Protocol set out in the Council’s Litter Management Plan, litter bins are generally not installed within 400m of an existing bin. Based on current bin provision and safety considerations, the area is considered sufficiently serviced, and no additional bin is required.
