QUESTION NO. 9

QUESTION: Councillor S. O'Hara

To ask the Chief Executive to provide an update on the landscaping, signage, and lighting for the public art at The Monk on 9th Lock Road, and advise on the expected completion timeline.

REPLY:

Origami Monk

The lighting of the Monk has been in place since last Autumn, a lighting design provided by the artist Ngaire Jackson placed four uplighters to the front of the sculpture to provide a warm glow to the front of the sculpture after dark. The lights were checked last week and are working.

We are currently seeking a quote for plant and landscape design for an area that will radiate three metres out from the sculpture. The timeline for these works will be subject to the quote but we would hope to have the works completed before the summer.

The Arts Office will be looking at signage for all of the permanent public artworks in the county in the third quarter of this year. There are 17 in total across the county, in both indoor and outdoor locations. We will be updating the Public Art database http://www.southdublin.ie/artsworks/ with recently commissioned works.

We will also be reviewing the Art Trax App which provides a complete overview of the public art landscape that has emerged in the county since the first public art commissions in the 1980’s. You can view and map the artworks, and access film works.
