MOTION NO. 3

MOTION: Councillor W. Carey

That this Area Committee considers a site within the Clondalkin/Corkagh park area to establish a full size all weather football pitch and a possible running track suitable for athletics competition and to bring back a report for consideration by Council.

REPORT:

South Dublin County Council commissioned a Sport Pitch Strategy (SPS) in 2020 to provide the Council with a clear, evidence based set of recommendations for future outdoor sports facility development across the district. The SPS demonstrates that the requirement for grass sports pitches generally is growing and in order to meet those requirements there is a need to provide Artificial Grass Pitches in various locations across the county.

At present; there is a Council approved and funded Artificial Grass Pitch Programme agreed and underway. 2 artificial grass pitches have been delivered (at Airlie Park and Sean Walsh Park) as part of this programme of delivery. The other 3 required locations are in the west and east of the county and within the new Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) area at Clonburris. The pitches associated with the Clonburris SDZ are currently at detailed design stage. At present there is a Part 8 underway for the Artificial Grass pitch in the east of the county. Opportunities for the west of the county are currently being evaluated.

Once this programme is complete, the evaluation of further potential sites across the rest of the county will progress. Site selection will be determined by a number of factors including: site availability, site suitability and other feasibility assessments in line with the Sports Pitch Strategy and other Council considerations. Should Corkagh/Clondalkin Park present themselves as potential options, the viability of a running track will also be reviewed at this time.
