MOTION NO. 10

MOTION: Councillor S. O'Hara

That this Area Committee assess the traffic situation outside St. Finian's National School in Newcastle, particularly at peak school times (9:00 am, 1:40 pm and 2:40 pm), and consider installing a safe pedestrian crossing, such as a zebra crossing, pedestrian crossing, or supervised 'lollipop' crossing to improve safety for the children attending the school.

REPORT:

The Traffic Section has examined the matter raised regarding traffic conditions outside St. Finian’s National School, Newcastle, with particular regard to the safety of pupils and other vulnerable road users at peak school times. A controlled pedestrian crossing is currently provided on Main Street, and a number of uncontrolled raised pedestrian crossings are in place on the road leading to the school, which provide traffic-calming benefits and assist pedestrians in crossing safely.

In addition, the new road access to the school has been constructed in accordance with the Design Manual for Urban Streets (DMURS), which prioritises pedestrian safety through reduced vehicle speeds, improved street design, and enhanced crossing environments. These measures collectively support safer pedestrian movement in the vicinity of the school.

The potential upgrade of the existing uncontrolled crossing(s) to a controlled pedestrian crossing has already been recorded on the Council’s assessment database. This request will be reviewed as part of the Traffic Section’s assessment process and is subject to the availability of resources, the number of similar requests, and the allocation of funding.
