QUESTION: Councillor D. Richardson
"Can the Manager report on uptake of grants for Community Centre's for solar panel's for the Tallaght area?"
REPLY:
SDCC administers the Community Climate Action Programme (CCAP) with funding of just over €2,000,000 provided by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment across two phases, to support the community sector to take climate action. Under Phase 1 of this Programme, three applications were received from Community Centres, none of which were located in the Tallaght area.
Applications for Phase 2 were required to be submitted by 22nd December 2025, and the assessment process is currently ongoing.
In addition to the CCAP, SDCC is availing of funding from the SEAI, through their Pathfinder Programme, to assist in progressing a programme to install solar PV on Council owned buildings. This Contract was awarded in 2025 and work is progressing on the first package of buildings, which focuses on Libraries and Community Centres, which were selected based on suitability for solar PV, energy consumption, other planned or ongoing building works or constraints.
This programme aims to provide financial savings on electricity bills and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by utilising this renewable energy, working towards the targets in our Climate Action Plan 2024-2029.
The detailed design for the solar array has been completed, with the exception of Ballyroan Community Centre which is at preliminary design stage, and applications are being made to the ESB. Pending approval of these applications, installation on site is expected to begin in March / April 2026.
