MOTION: Councillor F. Timmons
That this Area Committee request that SDCC issue a report that details how SDCC will address the following community storage needs (The equivalent of 4 containers) and estimate a cost for each:
1) Clondalkin Tidy Town 20ft (along with current storage)
2) Cherrywood Residents Group 20ft
3) Kilcronan Residents Group 20ft
4) Clondalkin Youth Band 20ft.
REPORT:
The Public Realm Section does not provide storage facilities for groups. The cost of funding these facilities would be a matter for the groups concerned. Storage containers that are located in parks and open spaces tend to attract antisocial activities and are not considered to be a long term viable solution. For this reason, siting such facilities in a public area is an onerous task. Suggestions received from groups for locating containers to date have not been feasible due to the proposed site being unavailable, unsuitable or too close to houses.
SDCC’s pavilion programme was agreed by the Council as part of its commitment to the health and well-being of its citizens. As clubs grow and develop, SDCC are very aware that facilities such as changing rooms, and secure storage areas become essential to a club’s sustainability and success. A review of the pavilion programme was carried out and presented to the Council in April 2024. The review process identified a requirement for additional capital provision, which was approved for the 2025 budget. The programme will deliver sports changing rooms at 10 locations across the county, to facilitate groups using adjacent pitches/sport in parks. This programme is designed to replace unsightly storage containers around the county.
The Community Department are aware of many requests for storage from local community groups and the provision of built storage will be considered as part of the overall redevelopment of the old pool building in Clondalkin Park. Groups are encouraged to engage with the Community Development team initially to discuss their specific needs, and the relevant Directorate will give consideration to how best these can be supported within available resources and suitable locations.
