QUESTION NO. 9

QUESTION: Councillor D. Richardson

"Can the Manager report on dumping in the Tallaght area, and report on the bad areas for dumping?"

REPLY:

Illegal dumping continues to be an issue across parts of the Tallaght area and is not confined to any single estate or area. The Council monitors dumping through routine inspections by Public Realm Operations and the Waste Enforcement team, SDCC customer care system and referrals from elected members and local communities. The Estate Management Section carry out garden inspections in council tenancies. Where there is a build-up of waste, action as available to the council can be taken.

From an operational point of view, dumping tends to recur in certain types of locations rather than specific named areas, including rural and urban laneways, poorly overlooked green spaces and locations where access or passive surveillance is limited. These locations can change over time depending on access, enforcement activity and seasonal factors.

The Council continues to work on a cross-departmental basis, combining enforcement, cleansing, design interventions and community engagement to actively manage illegal dumping and achieve sustainable improvements in affected locations.

It should also be noted that Tallaght has recently been assessed by An Taisce under the IBAL litter monitoring programme as meeting European norms for cleanliness, which reflects the ongoing work being carried out across the area.
