MOTION NO. 6

MOTION: Councillor N. Whelan

"This Area Committee recognises that the residents association in Springfield have done trojan work since they came together last year, however they are massively limited in what they can do to provide services for the community due to the area having no access to a community centre in the estate. I would request SDCC explore the possibility of providing a suitable space for the community of Springfield to allow them continue to build on their work?"

REPORT:

The Community Department would like to commend the Springfield Neighbourhood Resident Association for all their great efforts since coming together last year. The local Community Development Team have been working with the group and will continue to be available to provide advice and assistance to assist them with their efforts.

Within the Springfield area a number of community facilities are available for the local community to use, these include the Springfield Scouts Den which makes their multi use space available for bookings by community groups, the St. Mark's Youth Club & Family Centre and St. Mark's GAA Club both of which accommodate a range of community activities and offer space for community groups to hire. The Shalom Parish Centre also provides space for Community Groups to use and has been utilised by the Residents Association, while St. Mark's Secondary and National schools also make their halls available for local community use in the evenings and weekend outside school hours. A small community space is also provided for in the new Maplewood age friendly housing development.

In addition to these local facilities, in close proximity to the Springfield area there are a range of other larger community facilities, catering for a wide range of additional community needs these include: Tallaght County Library, The Civic Theatre, Rua Red Arts Centre, Think Big Space - Foroige Youth Services and Tallaght Leisure Centre.

The resident association can make contact with any of these facilities directly to enquire about available space or alternatively they can contact the local Community Development Team who are available to provide advice and support to the group on community facility provisions within the area.
