MOTION NO. 4
MOTION: Councillor N. Whelan
"This Area Committee requests that this council provide some sort of lighting at the playground in Kilnamanagh to deter anti social behaviour?"
REPORT:
Public lighting in playgrounds can give the impression that the space is open after dark which can encourage gatherings, and this in turn can sometimes lead to an increase in anti-social behaviour. In general the Council's Public Realm Section does not install lighting in playgrounds for this reason. The location of the Kilnamanagh playground will be examined to determine how best to improve visibility into the playground to help counteract anti-social behaviour there, and this may include the pruning of low branches on nearby street trees as well as the installation of additional lighting in the area if considered necessary.
The Public Realm Section holds regular meetings with An Garda Síochána regarding issues in public parks and open spaces and to address anti-social behaviour concerns when these arise. Concerns regarding anti-social behaviour in Kilnamanagh playground have been raised with An Garda Síochána and they have committed to increased patrols to monitor the situation and take appropriate action as needed.
