MOTION NO.13

MOTION: Councillor C Ahern

Cathaoirleachs Business

That the Council resurface and install footpaths along the length of Washington Lane, Rathfarnham, and provide upgraded public lighting. Over the years Washington Lane has become a very busy road with increased school and general traffic including cars, bikes and pedestrians using it daily and improvements are required to enhance public safety for children and adults.

REPORT:

Washington Lane has a unique character for an urban laneway as it has natural hedgerows running along it. If a footpath was to be constructed on this section it would require the widening of the roadway and result in the removal of sections of this hedgerow.

I would suggest that a school street would be more appropriate here and have less environmental and ecological impact. Alternatively traffic restrictions could be looked at during school drop off and pick ups but that would likely need involvement from the school to implement.
