QUESTION NO.4
QUESTION: Councillor J. Sinnott
To ask the Manager to advise on whether there has been any recent innovation to public bin design to capture waste more efficiently including the disposal of cigarette butts and further is there shared practice in terms of public bins across the four Dublin Local Authorities.
REPLY:
The Council is currently undertaking a tender process for public realm litter bins across the county, the tender process includes an emphasis on innovation to meet both current and emerging needs of citizens. In line with shared practices, SDCC is observing the recent initiative by Dublin City Council and Re-turn, where 80 bin surrounds for Re-turn logo plastic bottles have been installed in Dublin city centre, enabling the public to donate bottles and cans for collection and recycling by others. SDCC will review the results of this pilot to inform future decisions. Additionally, some of our bins are equipped with cigarette trays to provide a designated disposal area for cigarette butts, which helps reduce litter.
