QUESTION: Councillor R. Mannion

A number of signs in the area appear to have inaccurate translations in Irish e.g. Hermitage estate has differing translations on a number of road signs throughout the estate (either díthreabh which is the correct translation or Eirmeatáiste which is an Anglicisation of the name, and used in Lucan Hermitage) and Whitechurch has Séipéal Bán (which means Whitechapel) rather than An Teampall Geal on the stone at the entrance of the estate. Can I clarify how translations are decided and who would be responsible for recitfying these issues please?

REPLY:

While the responsibility for proposing naming and numbering schemes for new developments rests with the developer, the Council advises developers of requirements and approves the eventual scheme.

In accordance with the objectives of the County Development Plan, the use of the Irish language is encouraged and developers are required to submit an accredited Irish translation of the proposals.

In more recent years submissions for compliance with a Naming and Numbering condition are further vetted for accuracy within the Naming & Numbering section via the The Placenames Branch to ensure correct translation, particularly about the conventions around translating names.
