MOTION NO.1
MOTION: Councillor T. Costello
"Can the green area on Firhouse Road West just opposite the playground be considered for wildflower patch it's very prominent location in Aylesbury and looks unkept currently?"
REPORT:
The area in question is currently managed as a short-flowering meadow. These meadows are designed for public open spaces in residential areas where long-flowering meadows may not be practical. This approach aligns with the objectives of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan and provides an environmentally beneficial method of managing public spaces. The cutting and collecting programme allows short-flowering species to bloom and set seed, while also helping to reduce competition from grass species by depleting nitrogen in the soil. To enhance the meadow, pollinator-friendly bulbs could be considered for the space to provide an additional floral display. If members are in agreement the proposed bulb planting will be included in the provisional list for the 2025 Public Realm Improvement Works Programme. This list will be presented to Councillors at the January ACM meeting and subsequently to the full Council in February 2025
