QUESTION NO.9
QUESTION: Councillor A. Hayes
To ask the manager if SDCC would use willow trees, and/or other methods along the banks of the River Liffey at Watertown Park to help prevent erosion of the bank as is evident in parts.
REPLY:
The erosion of riverbanks is a natural phenomenon which continuously takes place as water courses make their way to the sea. Following periods of high rainfall, the effects of erosion can become more noticeable because of rising water levels and increased flow rates. The requirement to intervene in this natural process is dictated by several factors which include the necessity to protect property, structures or land. In this instance the erosion is affecting the land. An assessment of the affected area(s) will be undertaken to determine if the erosion is having a significant affect on the park or if it is of an acceptable level that does not require any action. Sometimes it is more appropriate not to intervene as it can result in consequences further downstream that might not have been initially apparent.
