MOTION NO.5
MOTION: Councillor A. Edge, Councillor L. Hagin Meade, Councillor L.Guéret
To report on maintenance of those cycle lanes which include bollards within the LEA in terms of removing tree matter during autumn.
REPORT:
The Council has a road sweeping and associated services contract in place with Oxigen Environmental Ltd. The provision of those services includes the sweeping of cycle lanes where they lie within the road carriageway and this sweeping occurs at a frequency of once per month on main roads. During the period September 1st to January 31st the contractor is required to provide a leaf removal service in response to requests from local residents, elected representatives etc. This service is provided on request and there is no limit on the number of times the contractor can be asked to revisit an area to carry out leaf removal.
The Council's Roads Dept have been developing a network of cycle lanes in recent years and this work is set to continue into the future. In some cases this has involved the segregation of the cycle lane from the road carriageway by installing flexible bollards, and in some cases the cycle lane has been separated by the construction of a kerb for example. The road sweeping contractor is required to provide the normal sweeping service and leaf removal service on these segregated cycle lanes. The contractor has acquired a special 'micro' sweeper which is less than one metre in width to carry out this work, which has been ongoing now for approximately 2 years.
