REPLY:
Disability Awareness Courses are arranged for Council staff by the Council's Training Unit in the Human Resources Department.
Todate 340 staff have attended these courses and it is planned to run more before the end of the year.
The main objectives of the course are,
* To give an overview of disability and the different types of disability including physical, sensory and hidden disabilities such as Mental Health
and Learning Disabilities.
* To explore personal experiences of disability.
* To explore the Models of Disability and promote a right based , equality focused approach.
* To raise awareness of disability issues such as the barriers that can exist for people with disabilities and the myths often associated with disability.
* To communicate appropriately with all service users. To develope an understanding of etiquette and access issues.
* To understand disability, as an issue in relation to service provision, and, within the workplace.
* To understand the current legislative framework as it applies to people with disabilities
