MOTION NO. 5

MOTION: Councillor G. O'Connell

That the Manager explain how the tree policy is applied in situations where trees are planted in replacement for trees that have been removed because they were in the wrong place.

REPORT:

The Council's tree management policy contains as an objective that replacement planting will take place in the case of all trees that require removal.  The replacement planting may take place at the same location as the removed tree, or at another location close by.  Where the same location is deemed to be the most suitable location for replacement planting, then sufficient time must be allowed for the underground root material to breakdown.  Typically this process can take 3 to 5 years.  Where it is necessary to remove a tree because it is considered to be in the wrong location then an alternative location will be selected for replacement planting, taking into consideration any site considerations such as the location of underground and overground services for example as well as the proposed location for the tree with respect to existing domestic entrances.
