QUESTION NO. 5

QUESTION: Councillor David McManus

To ask the Chief Executive if new tree planting is planned for Cromwellsfort Road, what works may be required to support new tree planting at this location, if SDCC will collaborate with Dublin City Council and if a statement is available?

REPLY:

The Council's Public Realm staff have inspected Cromwellsfort Road and have engaged with Dublin City Council regarding their tree planting and methods used in recent times at this location. Dublin City Council have planted 9 Birch (Betula pendula) trees, 12-14cm girth, double staked and enclosed by chestnut paling style fencing.  The City Council have planted these trees in close proximity to eachother at a location where the excavations were not in conflict with existing services and did not require a constructed tree pit system. This drastically reduced the cost of the installation as traditional tree pits could be utilised, which simply required the excavation of a hole and backfilling with suitable topsoil.

The South Dublin side of Cromwellsfort Road is particularly difficult with regard to tree planting for numerous reasons including  the extent of hard paved areas, the many instances of widened residential driveways, the provision of on-street resident car parking, traffic, overhead power lines and underground utility cables located within narrow footpaths in many locations.

A preliminary inspection has identified 6 potential tree planting locations where trees could be planted and further examination of these areas will be required in order to verify the precise location of under ground service.  The locations which have been identified are set out below.  The Public Realm Section is in the process of conducting a detailed underground utility assessment of the road and it is hoped that further tree-planting locations can also be identified through this exercise.
