MOTION NO.4
MOTION: Councillor Eoin Ó Broin
That this Area Committee compliments SDCC for the work carried out along the banks of the Camac River on the Watery Lane to remove the so called 'tunnelling effect' and receives a brief report on what was carried out and any learnings from the work.
REPORT:
Following Members Reps. ref: 1742539 from Councillor Eoin Ó Broin, and in consultation with Inland Fisheries Ireland and The Friends of the Camac, SDCC Drainage Operations removed some vegetation along the bank. We were advised, and agreed a plan with Fisheries, to remove just some targeted accessible areas of overgrowth, and to reduce the canopy over the river but not dramatically so. In regard to the 'tunnelling effect' we were advised that shade on a river can be helpful in keeping down the river temperature during hot spells, and also that long stretches of river without sunlight was not good for fish, so a balance of shade and light is desirable. With the welcome input of stakeholders we hope we have achieved a reasonable balance to suit the fish in this stretch of the Camac River.
