QUESTION NO. 21

QUESTION: Councillor D. Richardson

"Can the manager report on the amount of dumping in the tallaght area and what the cost was to the council for removal of waste in each LEA?"

REPLY:

Incidences of illegal dumping continue to occur in the Tallaght area. The Tallaght area is patrolled regularly by the Council’s Litter Warden.  All incidents reported or detected in any location are investigated. Where evidence is found, appropriate action can be taken under the Litter Pollution Acts. In many cases it is found that no personal information relating to polluters is contained within the dumped material, with personal information having been removed or shredded.

The following are the number of clean ups that were carried out in the Tallaght area in 2021:

2021

Tallaght Area Clean Ups

462

National Spring Clean

  28

Dublin Community clean-up

    4

TOTAL

494

In 2021, there was 7,235 tonnes of dumping removed by Public Realm crews. This was at a cost of €2.8 million to South Dublin County Council.  It is not possible to provide the cost to the council for removal of waste broken down by LEA as waste collected from various sources all goes into the truck. Therefore, it is not possible to separate out the illegally dumped waste from other waste (e.g., community clean-ups).
