MOTION NO. 11

MOTION: Councillor William Joseph Carey

"This Committee calls upon the Chief Executive to prioritise age friendly dwelling currently in use for the installation Central Mechanical Extraction Ventilation systems and that South Dublin County Council recognises that "mould" can be a particularly hazardous occurrence for those tenants of a senior age as well as those suffering from respiratory illness. (reference reply Q11 CAC, Jan 9th 2022)"

REPORT:

The issue of mould in properties can be caused by a combination of moisture, temperature within the property, tenant behaviour and the fabric of the building.  In the cases of severe mould, depending on the likely source of the moisture, measures including tenant education, introduction of mechanical ventilation and improvement to the building fabric can address the causes of mould.

Our ongoing planned maintenance and energy efficiency retrofit works relating to improved building fabric includes a number of age friendly homes and these works will reduce moisture build up within properties.  Mechanical ventilation will be utilised in any of these properties where necessary to tackle severe mould and tenant medical conditions will, of course, be considered when prioritising any such works to be as responsive as possible to their circumstances.
