MOTION NO. 25
MOTION: Councillor Derren Ó Brádaigh
To now ask the manager, in follow on from previously agreed motion agreeing introduction of gradual and durable park enhancement works / measure, that this council agrees to the construction of a mounted railing along the perimetre wall of the Quarryvale Park in Clondalkin.
REPORT:
The boundary of Quarryvale Park is approximately 1,032 metres long and is construct in two different ways. The northern boundary of the park along Fonthill Road is enclosed by a limestone faced block wall with solid bar railing over. This section of boundary is approximately 445 metres long. The boundaries on the south, east and west at Shancastle and Greenfort consist of a solid concrete wall and are approximately 587 metres long. There is evidence of a railing having existed here in the past however it would appear to have been replaced by the concrete wall to provide greater security to the park and prevent unauthorised access by vehicles.
Monies have been provided recently for Quarryvale Park in the Capital Budget. This will require public consultation in terms of capital proposals. Due to the large extent of boundaries the provision of railings would be best considered in the context of overall capital spend (with the exception of any immediate repairs required). The capital money has been provided for the improvement of Quarryvale Park including recreation amenities therein. It should be noted that boundaries tend to very expensive and care would have to be taken to ensure that the capital spend is carefully balanced between securing the park and providing or increasing amenity.
In the interim a section of wall at Shancastle Lawns will be included for consideration for repair in the Improvement Works Programme for 2022.
