QUESTION NO. 15
QUESTION: Councillor T. Costello
To ask the manager how many places are available in shelters in Tallaght for women & children escaping domestic violence. What is the alternative when a shelter if full.
REPLY:
Responsibility for the development and provision of services to support victims of domestic violence rests with the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs and the delivery of such services is managed through the Child and Family Agency, Tusla.
Housing authorities do not provide or oversee services specifically designed for victims of domestic violence. Previously housing authorities had provided funding to some refuges, however following the establishment of Tusla this element of funding transferred with full effect from 1 January 2015. The provision of placments in shelters for women and children escaping domestic violence is a matter for Tusla.
The South Dublin Co. Co. Homeless Unit works closely with staff in the shelters in Tallaght, and provides assistance to those who may be eligible to apply for social housing supports. Emergency accommodation placements can be provided for victims of domestic violence once Tusla engage with the Homeless Unit on behalf of their client.
