MOTION: Councillor Peter Kavanagh, Councillor Liam Sinclair, Councillor L. Donaghy, Councillor S.McEneaney

Natural, Cultural and Built Heritage - pg 79 Motion:To amend NCBH 12 Objective 1 as follows: To ensure that development is designed to avoid impacting on identified County Geological Site and to promote the importance and potential of such sites through the County's Heritage Plan.

REPORT:

NCBH 12 Objective 1 states:

‘To protect identified County Geological Sites from inappropriate development and to promote the importance and potential of such sites through the County’s Heritage Plan’.

The motion proposes to amend the objective as follows:

‘To protect identified County Geological Sites from inappropriate development To ensure that development is designed to avoid impacting on identified County Geological sites and to promote the importance and potential of such sites through the County's Heritage Plan’.

The wording of this objective was drafted in consultation with the Geological Survey of Ireland. The development of roads and the working of quarries expose geology, and by definition, geological sites are impacted by this. It is considered that the current wording which refers to protecting geological sites from ‘inappropriate development’ should be retained.

Recommendation: It is recommended that the motion is not adopted
