MEETING OF RATHFARNHAM/TEMPLEOGUE/FIRHOUSE/BOHERNABREENA AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, May 11, 2021

MOTION NO. 1

MOTION: Councillor Yvonne Collins

To ask the Council to consider funding for outdoor facilities for basketball within our area to enable this sport to be played despite the restrictions necessitated by the current pandemic

REPORT:

The Community Department plans to develop a sports plan for the county that will assess current provision, examine the requirement and make plans for the delivery of sporting infrastructure such as basketball provision.

Public Realm as managers of the public open space within the County and the recreational facilities therein will liaise with the Community Department on the development of the sports plan.

The Public Realm Department currently provide basketball facilities in tandem with tennis courts and as Multi Use Games Areas in our parks and open spaces across the county. These facilities are open to the general public to use. SDCC have recently applied for sports capital grant funding to renovate some of these facilities (at Dodder Valley and Cherryfield Park, Walkinstown) and are awaiting the results of this application. South Dublin County Council has recently recruited a Basketball Development Officer who will work with the Sports and recreation team in the Community Department to identify locations for outdoor basketball hoops or courts to be installed
