MOTION NO. 4

MOTION: Councillor Alan Edge

That this Area Committee calls on the Chief Executive to remind cyclists enjoying the Dublin Mountains to watch their speed and to be mindful of pedestrians following an incident where a Glenasmole resident was injured by a collision with a cyclist travelling at speed near the Upper Reservoir.

REPORT:

I acknowledge the cycle safety concern raised by the member. There is no legislated signage intervention for this situation and SDCC would have no enforcement role in this situation.  I have emailed Cycling Ireland, Smarter Travel and the Dublin Cycle Campaign with a view to adding descending skills to their Cycle Skills and Training Courses and any future Safety promotion information.  I also want to add this item to any future Cycle Safety Messages by South Dublin County Council.

Cycle Right is an initiative of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, in association with Cycling Ireland and other interested parties such as the RSA, An Taisce Green Schools, An Garda Síochána, Coaching Ireland and various Local Authorities and Local Area Sports Partnership.

Cycle Right training aims to give trainees the confidence, skill and road safety knowledge to use their bike to get places – to school, to work, for leisure. Over a series of stages, one to three, cyclists will increase their skills and experience, both in bike handling and in on-road cycling, leading them on a pathway towards proficiency and safe journeying on the road network. An enjoyable training experience, as a major component of enhanced learning, will be key.
