MOTION NO. 3
MOTION: Councillor Alan Edge
That the Chief Executive agrees that given the ongoing problem of Anti-Social Behaviour at the new playground in Carrigwood, to recommend cutting back the hedging between it and the road to afford greater passive surveillance.
REPORT:
The hedge in question which runs along the green space between Carrigwood and the Killininny Road is growing behind a high railing which would prevent it from being cut down below it's current height by a tractor mounted hedge cutter. It would present a problem for future maintenance of this hedge if it cannot be maintained by tractor operated machinery, as it would have to be cut by hand each year. The hedge as it currently stands provides a visually pleasing boundary to the roadway which should be maintained if at all possible.
It is hoped that a solution to this problem can be found however. There is a kissing gate located at the end of the playspace which provides access from Killininny Road into this green area, the possibility of cutting the hedge back at either side of this opening is being examined to determine if this would provide sufficient sight of the playspace from the public road. The possibility of lighting the playspace from the public lighting along the main road will also be examined with the Public Lighting Section.
