QUESTION NO. 8
QUESTION: Councillor Carly Bailey
To ask the Chief Executive to outline what village status is, if (and if so, why) villages receive greater funding and resources that other areas and how village status is determined. Can the Chief Executive please confirm the status of the areas of Orwell, Perrystown, Greenhills, Firhouse and Knocklyon?
REPLY:
The County Development Plan sets out a settlement strategy which aligns with national and regional policy and which identifies a hierarchy of the different settlements within the county based on their function, size and assets such as their services and infrastructure. The population targets for these settlements are set out in the core strategy of the Plan.
The County Development Plan also indicates, in the Heritage chapter, that South Dublin comprises an amalgamation of the previously industrial villages of Lucan, Palmerstown, Templeogue and Rathfarnham, the once rural villages of Tallaght and Clondalkin and the villages of Newcastle, Rathcoole and Saggart. Based on their history and urban form, these are viewed as the county’s historic villages.
Funding for different areas is a matter for the budget and for the purposes of individual schemes and initiatives.
