QUESTION NO. 19
QUESTION: Councillor F. Timmons
To ask the Chief Executive to issue a report into wheelchair accessibility in our council? are all Council owned buildings wheelchair accessible and have a fully compliant wheelchair toilet and if there are issues who should be contacted? (To Give and name and contact for SDCC Person responsible)
REPLY:
South Dublin County Council provides a high level and range of accessibility across its buildings and services for all disabled people, and those with mobility impairments.
Section 25 of the Disability Act 2005 deals with access to public buildings. It states that:
“a public body shall ensure that its public buildings are, as far as practicable, accessible to persons with disabilities”.
With specific regard to accessibility for wheelchair users:
SDCC buildings / facilities such as: County Hall, Civic Offices Clondalkin, all South Dublin Libraries, Rua Red, the Civic Theatre, Tallaght Stadium, The Round Tower Clondalkin, Camac Valley Caravan and Camping Park, Tallaght and Clondalkin Leisure Centres and Kiltalown House are wheelchair accessible and include accessible toilet facilities.
South Dublin County Council community centres are wheelchair accessible but not all of the centres have accessible toilets.
During 2020, Changing Places accessible toilet facilities were installed in County Hall and North Clondalkin Library. A third facility is currently under construction in the new Lucan Swimming Pool, and a Changing Places toilet facility will be installed as part of the planned expansion and upgrade of Tallaght Stadium.
Who to contact regarding accessibility?
Access issues should in the first instance be raised with the staff member responsible for the specific Council building. The Council’s Disability Liaison, Access and Equality Officer, Selina Bonnie, is the central SDCC contact regarding accessibility of Council facilities and services. Selina can be contacted at sbonnie@sdublincoco.ie or 01 414 9041.
