QUESTION: Councillor C. O'Connor
To ask the Chief Executive to outline actions he is taking to encourage safe cycling in our County?
REPLY:
The Council is actively progressing a number of work streams to promote cycling including:
Cycle South Dublin - A 10 year strategy to deliver over 170km of new and improved cycle lanes across the County. Public consultation on the draft programme concluded in December and a final programme will be brought to Council for approval early in 2021.
School Street - The Council has approved a programme of 8 school locations to provide improved pedestrian and cycle infrastructure to encourage more people to use active travel measures to get to School. The intention is progress delivery of the first 2 school street projects in 2021
Green Schools - In addition to the approved School Street programme, in 2020 the Council also delivered improved lines, crossings and signs at a number of schools to improve safety measures.
Light Segregation work - In addition to the Cycle South Dublin programme there is over 200km of existing lanes in the County, there are opportunities to make some of these existing lanes safer. The Council is actively designing and delivering a number of Light Segregation projects on existing cycle lanes to provide improved safety measures such as bollards and extruded kerbs. Works on Wellington Lane are underway with more schemes due to be delivered in 2021.
Bike stands and lockers - In 2020 the Council delivered 254 new bike parking stands (including cargo bike parking) of which 160 stands went into existing schools. The Council is also delivering Cycle Lockers a key transport locations that provide people with safe and secure bike parking.
