QUESTION NO. 2
QUESTION: Councillor Carly Bailey
To ask the Chief Executive why grass is not collected from pitches cut by SDCC teams. A number of clubs have advised that it is their view that it is dangerous to leave cut grass on pitches, as players can slip and fall and therefore could cause injury.
REPLY:
The Council's grass cutting operation involves the mulching of grass, with grass cuttings left behind on the pitch surface and not collected, and this is considered to be good practice. Grass cuttings contain nitrogen and potassium which serve as a natural fertiliser, the cuttings promote grass growth and help grass playing pitches to withstand stress, drought and disease. In addition when grass cuttings are left on the pitch it helps to promote soil moisture retention and improves the soil quality and composition. Healthier grass and soil enables playing pitches to take more hours of usage.
